With the festive season well behind us, it's that time of year again, where we swap the mince pies for a bowl of fruit salad and we reach for the yoga mat instead of the remote control. Yep, spring's the season to get fit and healthy! However, it's a common misconception that healthy eating is a laborious and time-consuming task.
I want to show you that superfood snacking really doesn't have to be a chore. I've selected my top five quick and easy on-the-go snacks that are perfect for giving you a morning energy boost or to beat that 2pm post-lunch slump.
The Super Smoothie
Ok, so getting out of bed is never easy, but a smoothie is the perfect antidote for those wake-up blues and are also a great way to kick start your morning. Depending on what you like, you can opt for a nutritious green smoothie – think apple, celery, kale and spinach with a dash of lime – or opt for a delicious fruit juice; why not try blending strawberries, raspberries, oranges and ginger for a zesty taste? The choices are endless and it's great fun making your own recipes!
Carrots and Hummus
Not only is hummus super tasty but it also boasts great health benefits too. Made with chickpeas, tahini and olive oil, hummus is high in protein, rich in essential fatty acids and has amazing antioxidant properties. Great for eating with chopped carrot sticks, this scrumptious duo will tide you over until dinnertime.
Greek Yoghurt
Thick, creamy and utterly delicious, Greek yoghurt is packed full of nourishing protein and healthy probiotic bacteria which helps to aid digestion. For added benefits, pair with blueberries for a winning combination. It’s quick to prepare and ultra nutritious, what’s not to love?
Cheese and Grapes
They may be small, but don’t underestimate the power of the grape. Considered a superfood, grapes have a high water content, which makes them great for hydration. Moreover, they are said to have anti-inflammatory, blood sugar and anti-aging benefits. Choose either red or green grapes and eat with low-fat cheese to sate afternoon hunger pangs.
Dark Chocolate
And if you really can’t go without chocolate, then you’ll be happy to hear that you can munch on one variety guilt-free, and it's surprisingly good for you! Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content is actually loaded with nutrients and has amazing health benefits – when eaten in moderation! Not only is dark chocolate a powerful antioxidant, but it’s also said to help prevent cardiovascular disease and reduce stress. Plus it will satisfy that sweet tooth too!
