Seven Secrets to Happiness

Most of us are in pursuit of happiness. Whether it’s meeting your soul mate, buying a bigger house or getting the perfect job, we’re always searching for that missing link to make us feel happier.

We focus so much on what our lives should look like, or what material possessions we don’t have, that we may forget to stop and take care of our mental wellbeing. True, long-lasting happiness is an inside job and we can only really be happy when we choose to be.

Sure, we will all go through highs and lows in life – how boring would it be if we didn’t? – but there are positive ways of thinking and perceiving things that can really make all the difference.

My seven secrets to happiness

1. Make time for yourself

There’s nothing wrong with wanting your own space now and again. Whether it’s reading a good book or going for a long walk, taking time to do the things you love can help decrease stress levels and make you feel more relaxed. Moreover, learning to be comfortable in your own company is a great way to enhance your self-esteem.

2. Stop comparing yourself to other people

We are all guilty of this one, especially in the era of social media. We’re constantly bombarded with pictures of engagement rings, travels in Australia and fun nights out with friends. But no-one shares the tears, the arguments and the disappointments that we all go through in life. It’s all too easy to start comparing when we’re only exposed to someone’s highlights. Instead, focus on your own goals and dreams. You’re moving at your own pace and that’s fine – remember that!

3. Express gratitude

When you wake up in the morning, start your day by saying three things that you’re grateful for. It doesn’t matter how big or small. Being thankful for what you do have can really put things into perspective and help to maintain a positive outlook on life.

4. Exercise

We all know the power of those little endorphins. Whether it’s five minutes of star jumps or a five-mile cross country run, get up, get out and get moving. The results will not only work wonders on your physical wellbeing, but on your mental health too. And it’s free!

5. Have adventures

Break out of your comfort zone from time to time. Some of the best memories come from the times where we nearly didn’t go. So every once in a while try saying yes to something you might normally say no to. You never know where your adventure could lead you to!

6. Spend time with the people you love

Relationships are one of life’s most powerful mood boosters. From hanging out with friends to eating dinner with family, there’s nothing better than spending time with the people who love you for who you are and allow you to fully be yourself.

7. Be present

Let go of the past and stop worrying about the future – living in the past can make you feel depressed, while living in the future can make you anxious. Learn to live for today. Focusing your attention on the present moment gives you greater clarity and makes you feel much more centered. So many of us worry about events that are simply beyond our control and we create scenarios that never actually materialise. So ditch the ‘What if?’ mentality and start living. The happiest people in life are the ones who are the most present.
